Biography

Barbara Thompson battled a weight problem from the day she was born. When her weight reached 264 pounds, and a herniated disk in her back was causing her to face disability, she knew she was in trouble. She had gastric bypass surgery in 2000.

Barbara Thompson known as the "Voice of Obesity" has been speaking nationally since 2001 to groups as small as 20 and as large as 19,000. She speaks to patient groups, hospital personnel and associations, and her presentations have drawn rave reviews. Through her speaking, she brings hope to the dangerously obese, and stresses the right for personal dignity at any weight. Barbara has been referred to as a pioneer in patient education. Over her 7 year speaking career she has spoken to over 100 groups in more than 30 States.

In 2001, Barbara published the original patient guidebook on weight loss surgery. Weight Loss Surgery; Finding the Thin Person Hiding inside You has been dubbed the “bible among bypass patients” by the Philadelphia Inquirer. She co-authored Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies in 2005. Her twice monthly e-newsletter is read by more than 10,000 patients and healthcare professionals. Barbara appeared on the cover of the summer 2008 issue of WLS Lifestyles Magazine. She has served as a consultant for the Wall Street Journal and CNN and has been featured in People Magazine and ABC’s Nightline.

Barbara is on the Board of Directors of the Obesity Action Coalition, and is a member of the Obesity Society and is the Past President of the National Speakers Association, Pittsburgh Chapter.
